History
CDG (Coalville Drama Group) was founded around 1951 as part of the Adult School Movement. Originally focused on entering local play festivals, early records show our participation in Leicestershire festivals. Our earliest documented performance was a series of three plays for the ‘Festival of Britain’ in 1951, and we still have the original poster!
Our Journey Through the Decades
Over the years, CDG has grown in both scope and community engagement. In the 1950s, members would travel to Leicester festivals, often carrying scenery by hand. Performances gradually increased from 2-3 shows per year to the quarterly productions we enjoy today, covering a variety of genres from dramas to comedies and farces.
Present Day
Quarterly Productions
Today, CDG stages a diverse selection of plays on a quarterly basis, including classic comedies, dramas, and unique adaptations. We’re especially proud of our directors’ commitment, and we continually enhance our stage equipment, lighting, costumes, and scenery to improve the quality of our productions.
This unique approach—allowing directors to choose and cast their plays—ensures passion-driven performances, setting us apart in the amateur dramatics field. Having presented over 250 productions, we look forward to many more years of drama, laughter, and fun!
